Information for Volunteers and opportunities available
We are a small independent community centre situated in the old chapel on the grounds of Whitchurch Community Hospital. We recently had extensive refurbishment to the building with an extension to house the new cafe and reception area. We are a designated healthy living centre offering activities to the community to enhance their lives keeping them mentally and physically engaged in positive activities. Volunteers with us can expect to be welcomed to try new activities and are encouraged to consider their own personal development if they should choose. For example…two of our volunteers have taken the PTTLs qualification (Preparing to teach in the life long learning sector) which may help them to secure paid employment in the future. So please have a look at our activities to see if you may be interested in joining us….
Committee Members & Trustees
We are always interested in hearing from people with a range of skills to join our management committee. Details available on request.
Community Car Scheme
This is a new opportunity for 2018. The Shropshire Community Car Scheme is organised and run locally by volunteers to provide transport for essential journeys where public transport is either unsuitable or not available and the passenger does not have access to a vehicle.
Volunteers use their own vehicle and the Council reimburses at a set mileage rate for each journey and any out-of-pocket expenses.
The scheme operates throughout Shropshire but in the Whitchurch area it is being co-ordinated from the Beechtree Centre, so if you feel you can spare a few hours please contact us on 01948 664447 and speak to Linda.
We are a Broadplace open to the public who can come in to use our laptops and access the internet for free. We run courses for beginners, digital camera, eBay etc. Our volunteers help with questions from clients, assist the tutor during courses and are available to help anyone who is experiencing difficulties. We also deliver a digital inclusion programme which helps people prepare digital CV’s, register on line with Government and recruitment websites. Volunteers help support people through this process.
Reception is our first point of contact and therefore first impressions are important. we are actively seeking volunteer receptionists who have a warm friendly manner and good organisational skills.
We have established a community garden in the grounds of the Community Hospital. We are looking for garden leaders to share their skills and enthusiasm with people who would like to learn more about gardening.
Walking for Health
The community centre is accredited under the Natural England walking for health scheme. The centre offers weekly walks at differing levels. Level 1 is around 45minutes, level 2 is around 2 hrs. We need a bank of volunteers to support this activity. Full training is provided by Shropshire Council and we can provide out of pocket expenses.
We run after school activities for 8-16yr olds. This work is funded by Children in Need and we have a qualified Youth Worker leading this project. Volunteers can add value to this work by supporting the Youth Worker with activities. This work is subject to enhanced DBS checks.
If you have a craft activity that you would like to share, please contact us.
The Local Food Café opened in January 2013 and will support the local food economy and provide value- for-money seasonal food options, underpinning on-going healthy eating programmes with various groups from the local community. We are looking for volunteers to help run the café.
Friends of the Beechtree Centre
When planning events we often need willing volunteers to distribute leaflets etc in their local area. We are always looking for innovative ways to raise funds and the profile of the centre.
Ideally you will have previous experience in one or more of these skill areas or may be a marketing student looking to gain some work experience in your holidays. You should be capable of taking the lead in a marketing and fund raising programme which you develop. You should be enthusiastic about the aims and ethos of the Centre and be willing to donate a few hours per week of your time. There are no fixed hours and you can work to suit yourself and the Centre, although some weekend availability would be useful to promote the Centre at local events or venues. You must be honest, cheerful, trustworthy and reliable and able to work with the existing mixed team of staff and volunteers.
How to apply
This is an on-going opportunity and there is no fixed closing date. If you are interested in applying, please send a CV with a covering letter telling us how you see the role and how you see yourself fitting in to it, to:
